Air NZ Skycouch™, Is It Really Worth The Upgrade?
Yes, now there’s a question we get asked all the time. So, to be able to fairly answer this question, it’s important to understand the Skycouch™ product, to then be able to determine if it is suited to your individual needs.
Everyone dreams of leg room and the freedom of being able to choose when you can be released from the tortuous restraints of an economy class seat, especially on a long-haul flight, beyond Australia and the South West Pacific. However, we sit in economy for a reason, and that is purely price driven. So, how is Skycouch™ value when you pay so much for it?!
In short, Air New Zealand’s Skycouch™ is really nothing more than a window row of 3 economy seats together with a little flip-up seat extension from the foot area of every seat, which extends your flat surface area when deployed. Absolutely, however, this is your own personalized piece of real estate for the duration of your flight. So sit up, lay down, lean against the window, or sit in the middle seat and be grateful for the luxury of a ‘no neighbour’ privilege, and the value starts to quickly unfold.
Is Economy Skycouch™ available on all Air NZ services I hear you asking, and the answer is no. You will only find these seats in the forward economy cabin of Air New Zealand’s 777 and 787-9 aircraft currently, and bookings are essential.
Seating choices are to book either one person in an entire row of three, or two people, so leaving one seat free between you, or for a minimal upgrade cost you can elect to have three people in his seating option, but this choice I struggle with a little, because really what is the point? All other passengers out of the Skycouch™ booking will be located in seats closeby, to ensure families stay together. Also, allowing everyone to swap in and out of the Skycouch at any time during your flight, should you choose to do so.
Pricing varies for the Skycouch™, and it really does depend on the booking class/price of your economy class seat, which is where the expertise from the team at AMPED will come in.
